Goodbye Margot Kidder

Margot Kidder

I must confess I have only seen Margot Kidder in five movies.  Of course four of them were Superman movies.  It is a curious thing that actors like Margot Kidder and Christopher Reeve made many movies.  Yet they will both be forever remembered as Lois Lane and Superman/Clark Kent.  It is a testament to the impact of their iconic performance in the Superman movies.  I am sure that it was far from an ideal situation for them as actors.  They helped to create two classic movies, Superman (1978) and Superman 2 (1980), that have stood the test of time. Superman has long been the benchmark for superhero/comic book movies.  The casting of Kidder and Reeve was perfection.  Over the years many fans found it difficult to  accept these two actors in any other roles.     Despite this both actors pushed forward and embraced many other diverse acting opportunities.

Over the years I have explored  Christopher Reeve’s filmography.  Unfortunately I can not say the same of Margot Kidder.  It was not a conscious decision, I just never sought out her movies.  She has an extensive resume of appearances in television and movies that ran from the late 1960’s up until 2017.

Kidder’s portrayal of Lois Lane has become so iconic that every actress to play the role since is measured against her performance.  Because of those performances she will forever hold a place in my heart.  I have watched the Superman movies various times over the many years since their debuts.  In the wake of her passing perhaps it is time for me to view some of her other films.  Goodbye to Margot Kidder, she brought a great deal of joy to many movie fans, myself included.
